Knee Joint Injections
Knee joint injections deliver medication directly into the knee joint space to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve function in patients with knee arthritis, cartilage degeneration, or inflammatory joint conditions. Dr. Rubin offers both traditional steroid injections and regenerative PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections for knee pain.
Conditions Treated
- Knee osteoarthritis — The most common indication; cartilage breakdown causing pain, stiffness, and swelling
- Rheumatoid arthritis flares
- Knee bursitis — Inflammation of the fluid sacs around the knee
- Meniscus-related pain — From degenerative meniscus tears
- Post-traumatic knee pain — After injury or prior surgery
Steroid Injections
Corticosteroid injections reduce joint inflammation rapidly and effectively. Relief typically lasts 1–3 months. Steroid injections are safe when appropriately spaced and are an excellent bridge to other treatments or a stand-alone option for patients not yet ready for surgery.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Injections
PRP uses your own blood — concentrated to increase growth factor and platelet content — to promote healing and cartilage regeneration within the knee joint. Unlike steroids, PRP aims to address the underlying tissue damage rather than simply suppressing inflammation. Multiple studies show that PRP provides longer-lasting pain relief than steroid injections in knee osteoarthritis, particularly in younger patients and those with mild-to-moderate disease.
See our PRP Therapy page for more details on this regenerative option.
Hyaluronic Acid (Viscosupplementation)
Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections — commonly known by brand names like Synvisc, Euflexxa, or Durolane — supplement the natural joint fluid (synovial fluid) that provides lubrication and cushioning. These are a useful option for patients who prefer to minimize steroid exposure.
The Procedure
Knee injections are performed under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance to ensure accurate intra-articular placement. The joint is accessed from the lateral or medial side. The procedure takes 10–15 minutes; most patients are weight-bearing immediately afterward.
