Vertiflex Superion Interspinous Spacer
The Vertiflex Superion is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive implant for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and neurogenic claudication. A small titanium spacer is placed between the spinous processes (the bony projections at the back of the vertebrae) to maintain a slightly flexed position — the position that relieves stenosis symptoms — without fusion or removal of spinal structures.
How It Relieves Stenosis
Lumbar spinal stenosis causes pain with standing and walking because the spinal canal narrows further in extension (standing upright). Bending forward or sitting opens the canal and relieves symptoms. The Vertiflex spacer mechanically holds the spine in a slightly flexed position at the treated level, effectively keeping the canal open during activities.
The Procedure
Under fluoroscopic guidance, the spacer is delivered through a small tube (no open incision required) between the spinous processes. The procedure takes approximately 30–45 minutes as an outpatient. General anesthesia is not required; local anesthesia with sedation is typical.
Advantages Over Traditional Surgery
| Feature | Vertiflex | Lumbar Laminectomy | |---|---|---| | Incision | Minimally invasive | Open surgery | | Anesthesia | Local/sedation | General | | Bone removal | None | Yes | | Fusion | No | Sometimes | | Recovery | Days–weeks | Weeks–months | | Reversibility | Removable | No |
Who Is a Candidate?
Vertiflex is appropriate for patients with:
- Moderate to severe lumbar spinal stenosis confirmed on MRI
- Neurogenic claudication (leg pain/cramping with walking, relieved by sitting)
- Failed 6+ months of conservative treatment
- Symptom relief when bending forward (a simple test that predicts good Vertiflex response)
- Age 45 or older
Coverage
Medicare and most major commercial insurance plans cover the Vertiflex procedure when appropriate criteria are met.
